Mark graduated from Purdue University with a B.S.C.E. and M.S.C.E. (civil engineering) in 1983. Heworked in the aerospace industry for sixteen years as a structural engineer, most recently at Sikorsky Aircraft. In 2000, after receiving his M.S. in Education from the University of Hartford, Mark joined the Thomaston High School staff as a math teacher. His current classes include Advanced Algebra, PreCalculus, AP Statistics and AP Calculus. Mark was Thomaston’s Teacher of the Year in 2016.


In addition to teaching, Mr. Olsen coaches high school cross-country and track and field. His teams have won seven state championships and nineteen Berkshire League championships. He was honored as the Connecticut Boys Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2013 and the Connecticut Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2019. Mark resides in Thomaston with his wife, Joyce. His five children, Tim, Josh, Gabe, Malik, and Sabrina, all attended Thomaston High School and are now scattered across the United States.
